Thanks for stopping in! I'm Jennifer, the Resourceful Occupational Therapist! I take what I know from my 10+ years of experience in pediatric occupational therapy and being a mom of 3, and turn it into simple, doable strategies you can actually use in real life.

No fluff. No overwhelm. Just practical support that helps kids build skills through play and participation in everyday routines.

Because play IS practice--and practice builds independence!

This 2-ingredient “ice cream” dough is sure to be a HIT 🍓🍦

All you need:
• 1/2 cup cheap hair conditioner
(I used strawberry & cream scented VO5)
• 1 cup cornstarch

Mix together until it forms a soft dough! I added a little red food coloring to make it extra pink, but that’s totally optional.

This is such a fun pretend play activity while also building:
✔️fine motor skills
✔️hand strength
✔️sensory exploration
✔️creativity & imaginative play

Bonus: it smells AMAZING 😍

fine motor skills, hand strength, visual scanning, sensory exploration, bilateral coordination, regulation, following directions, and just making therapy more engaging and fun for kids.

Also proof that you can make therapy activities out of basically anything if you try hard enough 😂

This “mix-a-storm” activity is more than just fun—it’s packed with skill-building. Kids follow a task card to add the right parts of the storm (rain, clouds, lightning, and wind) into their bottle…one scoop at a time.

it’s about being intentional and meeting kids where they are.

This activity took only 2 minutes to set up…(plus about 30 minutes of waiting for the water beads to grow🤪)

🫧 What skills are we working on?
• Fine motor control (grasping, releasing, manipulating)
• Bilateral coordination (both hands working together)
• Tactile processing (messy play tolerance + exploration)
• Hand strength (squeezing, scooping, scrubbing)
• Visual-motor integration (finding & retrieving objects)
• Sensory regulation (calming, organizing input)

💡 And the best part?
Kids think they’re just playing…
…but they’re building the skills they need for independence, focus, and participation.

Hair brushing is one of the most common sensory triggers I see as a pediatric OT.
